From Selong Belanak to Tanjung Aan

Lombok's south coast is a string of crescent bays and headlands, much of it still quiet and undeveloped by Bali's standards. Right on our doorstep, Selong Belanak is a wide, gently shelving arc of pale sand — calm, shallow water that's ideal for a swim, a long walk or a sunset, and the bay where most people in the area learn to surf.

Within a short drive there's more: the rugged little cove at Serangan, the famous powder-white horseshoe of Tanjung Aan, the headlands above Mawun and Mawi, and a handful of beaches you'll often have nearly to yourself. Here's our local guide to the best beaches near Boni Beach — what each one is good for, whether it's calm or surf-y, and how to reach it.

Serangan Beach

Serangan Beach

Serangan is a quiet, rugged little cove just around the headland from Boni Beach — the closest beach to us, and one of the calmest. Where Selong Belanak is wide and social, Serangan is for slowing down: a short scooter ride and a simple path bring you to a pocket of sand backed by rock, with no boat needed and rarely a crowd. It’s a fine place to swim, watch the surfers working the reef break offshore, or just sit with the sound of the waves and a quiet, golden sunset.

Selong Belanak Beach

A wide arc of soft white sand and calm, shallow water, Selong Belanak is one of South Lombok’s most welcoming beaches. It’s ideal for swimming, families, and first-time surfers, with gentle waves and plenty of beginner-friendly surf schools along the shore. Warungs line the beach serving fresh seafood, coconuts, and Indonesian dishes, while traditional fishing boats and the afternoon buffalo walk give a glimpse of everyday coastal life. Sunset often turns the whole bay gold.

Tanjung Aan Beach

A double-arc bay separated by a small headland, Tanjung Aan is known for extremely soft white sand on one side and more textured “pepper” sand on the other. The water is shallow and clear, with small waves that are good for swimming, paddling, and beginner-level fun. It’s a good day trip from Boni if you want more classic “postcard” scenery and easy access to simple beach cafés.
