Where to Surf in South Lombok

South Lombok's Best Surf Breaks
South Lombok is one of Indonesia's most rewarding stretches of coast to surf — a run of reef and beach breaks scattered within an easy scooter or boat ride of Selong Belanak. The gentle, sandy-bottomed waves at Selong Belanak itself make it one of the best places in Lombok to learn, with a couple of surf schools and forgiving whitewater for first-timers.
When you're ready for more, the reef breaks deliver — the long rights of Gerupuk and Serangan, the wrapping walls of Ekas, and the punchier peaks at Are Guling and Mawi, each working best on its own tide and swell. From Boni Beach you're well placed to reach most of them, by scooter or by boat. Here's our local rundown of the breaks nearby, who each suits and how to get there.
Serangan Wave

Serangan is a powerful right-hand reef break just around the headland from Boni Beach — one of the easiest quality waves in the area to reach, by a short scooter ride and a simple path with no boat required. It works best on a low tide and is most consistent through the wet season, peeling long and fast for intermediate and advanced surfers looking to escape the Selong Belanak crowds. On smaller days it’s also a lovely spot to watch the surf from the shore.
Gerupuk Bay

Gerupuk is a working fishing village wrapped around a bay filled with surf spots. Boats ferry surfers to a cluster of breaks suitable for different levels, from gentle rollers to heavier swells. On land, life stays simple: warungs, homestays, and hills you can climb for views over the boats and islands scattered across the bay. Located 50 mins east of Boni Beach Gerupuk offers 5 waves. Waves are suitable for all levels.
Ekas Wave

Ekas is a 30 min boat ride from the coast and offers two waves. Ekas is suitable for all surfing levels. Further east, Ekas feels remote and spacious. The bay is known for surf breaks like Ekas Inside and Outside, plus calm pockets good for swimming, snorkeling, and boat trips to smaller coves. It suits guests who don’t mind a bit of travel in exchange for fewer people, dramatic light, and long quiet evenings.
Are Guling

Are Guling located 20 mins from Boni Beach is a high moderate to advanced wave. Most popular in Wet Season. Areguling feels like a secret bay: long stretches of pale sand, turquoise water, and rolling hills behind. It’s a place to surf mellow waves, snorkel over coral, or just walk in near silence. A handful of small accommodations and villas sit back from the shore, so you can stay close and keep the beach as your daily routine.
Seger Reef

Just beyond Kuta, Seger offers a mix of soft sand, shallow water, and low-key local life. It’s quieter than Kuta itself, with a small fishing community, simple warungs, and a strong connection to Sasak tradition, especially during the annual Bau Nyale festival. From the surrounding hills, you’ll get wide views over the Mandalika coastline. Just 10 minutes east of Kuta, this is a wave for all skill levels. Waves break close to the shore.
Mawi Beach

Mawi is a small, dramatic bay framed by rocky cliffs and open ocean. The beach itself is beautiful and relatively undeveloped, but it’s best known for powerful, consistent waves that attract more experienced surfers. Swimming is not recommended due to the reef and strong currents; most people come to surf, relax on the sand, or enjoy the view from the simple bamboo shacks that serve drinks and snacks.
Desert Point

Desert Point is one of the world's best surf breaks. Best at 3-8 ft and located on the South West Coast of Lombok, on its day Desert Point is regarded as one of the best waves in the world. On the southwest tip of Lombok, Desert Point is a pilgrimage for experienced surfers, famous for its long, barreling left-hand wave. It’s remote, rustic, and best treated as a full-day or overnight surf mission rather than a casual beach stop. For non-surfers, the appeal is in the wild, untouched coastline rather than amenities.
